Lies Women Believe | Book Review

For years it sat there. I’ve had a copy of the original Lies Women Believe tucked primly on the bookshelf in my ‘Spiritual Growth for Women’ section, dutifully dusted periodically, but never read.

Who can say why I never got around to reading it? Assuming it’s positive resource value there on my bookshelf was oddly comfortable enough, I suppose. I’ve heard Nancy speak multiple times and trust her work. And so, the long-neglected book made it through last years’ book decluttering project. Still, it lay there in a stack of good intentions, …waiting.

Newly Updated and Expanded

When I first heard Lies Women Believe by Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth was in the process of being updated and expanded, I knew I must start there and forget looking back. September 2018, I received the new edition as an anonymous gift (Thank you!!), and decided to add it to my blog review list. It seemed a rather important book. Nothing like the use of a little accountability to get some things done, right?

Excellent Work and Resource

It’s taken considerably longer than expected but, I’m so pleased finally to share my review with you all today. Lies Women Believe is indeed an excellent work and resource!

The book is divided into ten categories of lies women believe, – about God, themselves, sin, priorities, sexuality, marriage, children, emotions, circumstances, and get this, – about the Truth! The author then addresses forty-five lies that women commonly believe in these areas. They each get a fair discussion and relatable scenario to ‘flesh out,’ so to speak, the lie that is being exposed.

Countering Lies With The Truth

One of my favorite aspects of the book is at the end of every category. There are Countering Lies With The Truth charts that quickly clear away clutter and gets to specifics. It lists the lie, the Truth and corresponding Scripture for every topic, with no commentary. Spot on! These charts are phenomenal tools, making this book a further outstanding resource for continued use and counsel.

Nancy asserts “Believing lies places us in bondage.” Nevertheless, “the Truth has the power to overcome every lie,” and “the Truth has the power to set us free.” Furthermore, “the Truth has the power to sanctify us.” The book is a literal powerhouse.

Test It Like A Berean

While sticking carefully to Scripture to define Truth, I believe Nancy did a fine job of keeping her personal opinion to a minimum. However, Nancy’s opinion did weigh in on some conclusions. I would be absolutely comfortable with this if Truth and opinion were stated distinctly in some way. There is a need for caution as always in this sort of work, that must be reckoned with like a New Testament Berean.

We cannot allow personal conclusions on a matter to reach farther than Scripture does, inadvertently binding the conscience of others, on matters that God doesn’t expressly say. Whether teaching or learning it is important to entrust ourselves to the Lord when dealing with Truth. We need God’s help of discernment and grace to cover us. That being said, be assured, my concerns were minimal.

Humility Is Key In Receiving God’s Truth

Lies Women Believe is one hefty book. According to word reading averages, the book could technically be read in twelve hours or so. However, the material is substantial to chew through. It took time and intentional effort to read. If you choose to give Lies Women Believe a try, get ready to test your mind according to Scripture. It is a worthy challenge!

After reading and assessing my own beliefs on each of the listed lies, I am finding a heart of humility to be key in receiving God’s truth according to Scripture. Truth can be so incredibly abrasive, blunt and uncomfortable. And while it will undoubtedly set us free, humility on our part is essential to receiving the Truth.
