I am not sure if Stache went searching for adventure, or if adventure came looking for Stache. Regardless, I’m pleased to report, if you and your Love enjoy food adventure, you are sure to find one here.
With an obvious plan up his sleeve, Stache proudly drove us into the city. We found a rather edgy, hipster styled, casual eatery. Relatively new to their Massachusetts Avenue, Indianapolis location, Love Handle has quickly gained a trusted name for their creations using local and artisanal ingredients.
Their menu presents quite the selection of unique fare, not likely appealing for the faint of heart! I dare say, I have never seen anything quite like it. Apparently, the menu changes often, so you never quite know what you will encounter, but that is merely another layer of their distinct charm.
Being the more cautious of the two of us, I chose the Schnitzel and Waffle with Miso Lime Butter and Hot Honey along a side of Chicken Gizzards to share. Stache, on the other hand, went all in and chose Pork Tongue, Jellied Egg, and Cheese Toast.
Reading the menu board, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Miso Lime butter on my breakfast waffle gave my mind a bit of a rattle. I am telling you though, Wow! The combination on my plate was nothing short of a pure delight.
Stache’s choice was no surprise. The man loves himself some Lengua, so it was no stretch to go for the pork tongue. His selection exceeded expectation, he was blown away! The jellied egg was an entirely new experience and did not disappoint.
As is our way, we shared bites from our plates with each other. Of course, Stache enjoyed mine. It was fantastic!
I’m going to admit, I closed my eyes and willed myself, not see what I could see there on Stache’s plate. I’m squeamishly attempting to say, the tongue was still a wee bit more “anatomically correct” than I’d ever care to see, much less taste.
For Stache, that’s all part of the adventure. He loves for me to break out and give things a fair chance. And I loathe to disappoint him. To be fair, the combination was totally delicious!!
Back in the day, we actually cut up our own chickens. (Shocking, I know!) Giblets routinely made it to the dinner table. I grew up foraging through our weekly platter of fried chicken hoping to snatch the gizzard before someone else grabbed it. Imagine my surprise to see them there on the list of Add-Ons and Sides. A whole bowl of them, I couldn’t pass them up. Yum!
The owners of Love Handle were genuinely friendly. No pretension what so ever. It seems they are attracting a rare community of food adventurists.
Complete strangers were cheerfully chatting with each other, suggesting items to order and giving bites of food, simply to share the experience. We shared a few of our gizzards. What a kick! Given the opportunity, I’m sure we’ll be back.
Blindsided and google-eyed by the Chocolate Shop across the street where we parked, somehow we missed that Love Handle has an equally fantastic reputation with their desserts. We’ll be sure to remedy that decision next time we head out to the city.
That’s not to say we were in anyway disappointed with our sweet treat across the street. In fact, after indulging as we did at Love Handle, a simple nutty bite of superbly excellent chocolate was the perfect end to a delicious breakfast.
For Rob’s birthday one year I took him to a restaurant called Tinker Street in Indy (strangely enough, it is on East 16th St). It was quite the gourmet place and a little pricey, but very fun and delicious. It too, changes its menu often and has a variety of unusual dishes; the fennel was glorious. I think you and your hubby would like it.

Thank you, Cricket! We will look it up and add Tinker Street to our list! Birthday season is around the corner. Maybe we can do “a little pricey” then, lol. 🙂
